While OpenAI and Microsoft push chat checkout and coding agents, Anthropic’s proprietary desktop half of the agent war: a **folder-scoped agent on the Mac** for everyday office work—act on local artifacts, not only answer questions.

**Anthropic** released **Claude Cowork** as a **research preview** on January 12 on **Claude Desktop (macOS)**. Pitch: “Claude Code for the rest of your work”—agentic execution for knowledge workers. Initial access: **Max** plans; **Pro** expanded **January 16**. Capabilities: multi-step tasks over **user-designated local files and folders**—document creation/editing, file management, research-style workflows—without living in a terminal. Scope control: user chooses access; not unrestricted whole-disk agency. ## Limits

- Research preview: reliability and permission UX will move.
