> Anthropic committed $200 million to external research on AI labor-market interventions and launched an Anthropic Economic Index connector inside Claude. Frontier labs treating labor and distribution as first-class work—same week as the multi-GW AMD compute deal; independence of lab-funded research remains the open question.

Frontier labs increasingly treat **labor and distribution** as first-class product and policy work—not only model GA. A **$200M** external evidence fund plus a **consumer-accessible Index connector** is Anthropic productizing economic measurement the same week as a **multi-GW AMD compute deal**.

**Anthropic** released the research agenda for the **Anthropic Economic Futures Research Fund**, committing **$200 million** to **ambitious external research** on interventions that could make economies more flexible as AI scales—and launched the **Anthropic Economic Index connector** for Claude so users can ask occupation-, task-, and region-level questions grounded in Index data.

## Economic Futures Research Fund

The fund expands the year-old **Economic Futures** program toward **large grants** (primary target band **$5–30 million** per project; floor generally **$1 million**; upward flexibility for high-impact work). It builds on Anthropic’s June **Economic Policy Framework (EPF)** and prioritizes five research areas:

1. **Shaping AI’s impact on workers** at firm and workplace level (field experiments on integration design, worker voice, gain incidence)
2. **Equipping people for AI-driven transitions** (retraining, placement, education pipelines, mobility instruments)
3. **Modernizing income support** for broader or more persistent displacement (UI reform, basic needs, longer-duration income pilots)
4. **Building worker stakes in AI-driven growth** before disruption (pre-distributive capital accounts, equity-sharing, dividends, tax incidence)
5. **Public investment evidence** (human-facing service jobs, AI-enabled public services, guaranteed-jobs and place-based pilots)

Eligible applicants include accredited universities, research institutes, policy organizations, and nonprofits with scale field-experiment track records—not individuals in a personal capacity. The fund is **global**, though the written agenda is partly U.S.-centric. Anthropic wants partners who share findings **early enough to act**, not only after traditional publication cycles.

## Anthropic Economic Index connector (same day)

Also **July 22**, Anthropic shipped a **Claude connector** for the **Anthropic Economic Index**—the public dataset measuring how Claude is used across the economy. In **claude.ai**, users enable **Anthropic Economic Index** from the connectors directory (no install). Example queries Anthropic highlights:

- Which occupations use AI the most?
- How do people in a given U.S. state use Claude?
- What tasks do teachers automate?
- How have automated tasks changed over the past year?

Answers are grounded in Index data; Anthropic stresses the Index reflects **Claude usage patterns**, not the full labor market, and Claude should surface source limitations. Full datasets remain free on Anthropic’s site.

## Limits

- Index reflects Claude usage, not the full labor market—Anthropic says so explicitly.
- Lab-funded external research independence from commercial incentives is an open critic question, not resolved here.
- Grant band ($5–30M) is agenda intent; first awards are ahead.
