> Anthropic India managing director Irina Ghose told the Times of India that Claude requests sent through Amazon Bedrock’s India endpoint are now processed on servers in India, the data-residency condition regulated banks and government bodies asked for. She said India is Claude.ai’s second-largest market. The India profile AWS launched on Sept. 29 covers Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5 — not the newer 5.5 models.

For Indian banks and government buyers, the question about Claude was never capability; it was where the prompt goes. Anthropic now has an answer for its previous-generation models, and is using it to pitch India as a market that is already its second-largest for Claude.ai.

**Irina Ghose**, managing director of Anthropic India, told **The Times of India** (Oct. 5) that “requests sent to Claude through the India endpoint are processed on servers located within India,” and that customers in regulated sectors asked for exactly that. The plumbing is AWS’s: on **Sept. 29**, Amazon Bedrock launched an India geographic cross-Region inference profile for **Claude Opus 5, Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Haiku 4.5**, routing requests only between the **Mumbai (ap-south-1)** and **Hyderabad (ap-south-2)** Regions.

## What actually stays in India

Per AWS’s post, inputs and outputs may move between the two Indian Regions but not outside them; customer data is not stored in the destination Region; Bedrock does not store model inputs or outputs by default, with the caveat that some models require AWS human review when automated safety classifiers flag content; and billing, CloudWatch and CloudTrail logs stay in the source Region. The profile works with Anthropic’s Messages API and Bedrock’s InvokeModel and Converse APIs, plus Guardrails.

The model list is the catch. The India profile names Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5. Anthropic’s newer 5.5 family, including [Opus 5.5](https://timesof.ai/2026/09/anthropic-claude-opus-5-5), is not in it, so a residency-bound Indian bank gets in-country processing one generation behind what global customers can call.

## The market pitch

Ghose told TOI that India is Anthropic’s **second-largest market for Claude.ai**, and that software development accounts for **45.2%** of work-related tasks users bring to Claude there, which she called the highest share of any market. She cited **TCS** equipping **50,000** associates with Claude, **Infosys** combining it with its Topaz platform, and deployments at Cognizant, LTTS and Swiggy. Anthropic’s Bengaluru office opened in February, and the company says it is improving Claude’s training data across 10 Indian languages with Karya.

That builds on [rupee pricing for Claude in July](https://timesof.ai/2026/07/anthropic-claude-india-rupee-pricing): local currency first, local processing now.

## Limits

- Market rank and usage shares are **Anthropic’s figures** given in an interview; no underlying data was published.
- Customer deployments are as listed by Anthropic to TOI, not confirmed with each company.
- The capability shipped on Sept. 29 via AWS; the new information on Oct. 5 is Anthropic’s positioning and figures.
- Whether and when 5.5-family models join the India profile was not stated by either company.
