AI Selloff Hits the Suppliers Hardest: Intel Closes Down 28.6% and the Chip Index Falls 7.2% While the Hyperscalers Slip 1% to 2%

The Nasdaq 100 fell 3.5% on October 30, Reuters reported, and NBC News said it was the index's worst day since mid-June and that tech stocks lost more than $1 trillion in value. The heaviest losses were among AI suppliers rather than the hyperscalers: Intel closed down 28.6%, AP reported; the Philadelphia semiconductor index fell 7.2%, according to NBC News; and AMD lost 10.9% and SanDisk 13%, while Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and Alphabet fell 1% to 2%, Reuters reported. Reddit fell 29%.

The companies spending on AI held up better on Friday than the companies they buy from. Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and Alphabet fell 1% to 2% on October 30, Reuters reported, while Intel closed down 28.6%, according to AP, the Philadelphia semiconductor index fell 7.2%, according to NBC News, and SanDisk, AMD and the neocloud operators Nebius and CoreWeave each lost more than 10%, Reuters and NBC News reported. NBC News reported that Arm, Qualcomm and Marvell each fell around 10%, that neocloud operators Nebius and CoreWeave dropped more than 10%, and that the S&P 500's tech sector fell more than 4.2%. AP, as carried by Fortune, said Nvidia's 4.2% fall was the heaviest single drag on the S&P 500. Reuters said the Nasdaq Composite is now 7.8% below its closing high, after its worst month since March 2025.

What set it off#

Intel's forecast did the most damage. The company guided fourth-quarter revenue below expectations and warned of weaker PC demand, as we reported in our account of Intel's results. Chief executive Lip-Bu Tan told investors the company faces "manufacturing, supply shortage, the unprecedented memory crunch and the resulting softness in PC demand," NBC News reported.

The selling built on a bad Thursday for the hyperscalers. Alphabet had its worst day on record on October 29, and Amazon said it still expects about $220 billion of capital spending in 2026 and "meaningfully more in 2027," according to NBC News. Amazon closed down 1.4% on Friday after falling as much as 10% after hours on Thursday. Reddit fell 29.22%, its worst day since going public, after a weak fourth-quarter forecast, CNBC reported.

The financing question#

Analysts quoted by Reuters tied the selling to how the build-out is paid for. Capital Economics said the four hyperscalers accounted for more than a third of capital spending by current S&P 500 companies over the past 12 months. "Now that the combined capital spending boom at the hyperscalers is becoming partly dependent on external financing, investors are becoming more nervous about the sums they are collectively investing and how they are doing it," said John Higgins, a markets economist at Capital Economics. Others were less alarmed: "I don't think it's a particularly troublesome leverage issue that we're dealing with," Wedbush's Sahak Manuelian told Reuters.

The pattern echoes the October 22 rout, when the chip index fell 6.7% after Meta's results.

Limits#

  • Sources differ on Intel's record. AP says 28.6% was Intel's worst drop since 1974; NBC News called it the worst single-day drop in data going back to the 1980s.
  • NBC News reported the Nasdaq 100 down 3.4% in afternoon trading and the Nasdaq Composite down 2.8%; we use Reuters' 3.5% for the Nasdaq 100 and AP's closing 2.9% for the Composite.
  • Sources frame the "worst day since June" differently: NBC News applies it to the Nasdaq 100, Reuters to the Nasdaq Composite, and AP to the S&P 500.
  • The "more than $1 trillion" loss in value is NBC News' figure; we did not calculate it.
  • Single-stock percentages for SanDisk, AMD, Micron and Nvidia come from the quote table on the Investing.com page carrying Reuters' story.
