Update: Anthropic in Talks for a Second ~$45B Nscale Deal at Monarch, Bloomberg Reports; Microsoft Drops a UK Nscale Site Over Power

October 19: second Monarch talks; Microsoft exits Loughton#

Nscale is in negotiations to sell computing power to Anthropic in a deal that could reach about $45 billion, Bloomberg reported on Monday, October 19, citing people familiar with the talks, as carried by Bloomberg Línea (Spanish; our translation). The second building at the Monarch campus in West Virginia would provide 460MW on Nvidia Vera Rubin, with a right of first refusal on a third building, those people said. Existing Anthropic–Nscale agreements total about $44.6 billion per Nscale's IPO filing, Bloomberg reported. The deal could close "in the coming days"; both companies declined to comment. Reuters said it could not independently verify the Bloomberg report.

Separately, Microsoft pulled out of Nscale's Loughton, Essex site — 50MW and 23,040 GB300 GPUs — because grid power is not expected until the 2030s, Reuters reported via CNA. A Microsoft spokesperson said: "This decision relates to a single site." Nscale said its relationship with Microsoft remains strong and that it is exploring alternative power for Loughton. Nscale's contracted value stands above $103 billion, Reuters reported.

Limits of the October 19 update#

• The second deal rests on Bloomberg's unnamed sources; Reuters could not verify it. Bloomberg Línea carries the same Bloomberg reporting and is not independent corroboration. The August 26 report below was also a Bloomberg relay.

Earlier report: the first reported $45B Monarch lease#

Anthropic agreed to spend approximately $45 billion over six years on AI computing capacity from Nscale’s West Virginia development, Reuters reported on August 26, citing Bloomberg.

The reported arrangement represents about 460 megawatts and would use NVIDIA Vera Rubin chips. It would be a substantial future capacity commitment, rather than evidence that all of that infrastructure was already installed or in service.

Limits#

Anthropic and Nscale did not immediately respond to Reuters. The inspected Reuters account relays Bloomberg’s reporting; it is not a separate company confirmation. It does not establish the campus’s total capacity or Microsoft’s allocation.
