Anthropic Says Junior Technical Hires Fell From 27% to 9% of Intake as Agent Hours Hit 6:1; Staff Expect Far Faster AI Progress Than the Public

Two Anthropic Institute reports published Oct. 16 say junior roles fell from 27% to 9% of technical hires as interactive agent hours reached six times human hours by August. In a staff survey, 91% expect a Nobel-level AI discovery by 2030 against 39% of US adults. The data are Anthropic's.

A frontier lab is publishing its own internal labour data as it heads to an IPO. On Friday, October 16, the Anthropic Institute released two research reports.

Employment at Anthropic

"How employment is changing at Anthropic" says junior roles fell from 27% to 9% of technical hires and from 21% to 14% of technical employees. By August, interactive AI agent hours outnumbered employees' six to one, code commits per engineer rose about fivefold over six months, and meeting time for the median employee was up 20%, Anthropic says. It says it is building an early-warning system for labour effects.

The expectations gap

"The AI expectations gap" compares a survey of 1,334 staff (August 9–12) with a Morning Consult poll of 10,980 US adults. 91% of staff, against 39% of the public, expect a Nobel-level AI-driven discovery by 2030. Staff on average expect AI to do 75% of their own work by 2030 against 28% for US workers. Implied model GDP growth from median answers is 17.1% against 5.4%. The staff median says 51% of frontier-model development work is already done by AI.

Limits
