Privacy policy
Last updated: November 2, 2026
This page explains what Times of AI collects when you read the site or subscribe to the newsletter, who processes it, and what you can do about it. Times of AI is run by Mohit Tyagi, who is responsible for the data described here. Questions or requests: [email protected].
Summary
- We use three analytics tools: Google Analytics, Fathom and Loomlytics. Only Google Analytics sets cookies.
- Visitors in the EU, the rest of the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland see a cookie banner. Google Analytics doesn't load for them unless they choose Accept.
- If you subscribe, we store your email address and a few timestamps so we can send the newsletter and honour unsubscribes.
Analytics
Google Analytics
Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-H3W5FJJL7V) tells us which pages are read and where readers come from. Google receives your IP address, browser and device details, the page you're on and the referring page, and sets the cookies listed below. It loads after the page has finished loading.
- EEA, UK and Switzerland: it loads only after you choose Accept on the cookie banner.
- Everywhere else: it loads by default. You can turn it off under Cookie settings in the footer.
Google's privacy policy and GA4 cookie documentation explain how Google handles this data.
Fathom
Fathom Analytics counts page views without cookies. Its script sends the page address, referrer and query parameters; the request also carries your IP address and browser details. Fathom says it turns these into a visitor signature hashed with a salt that changes daily, and doesn't store raw IP addresses with page views. See Fathom's data journey and privacy policy.
Loomlytics
Loomlytics also counts page views without cookies. Loomlytics says it collects the page address and path, referrer, campaign tags, browser, operating system and device type, country and city looked up from your IP address, screen size and time on page, and doesn't store IP addresses in its analytics records. It skips tracking when your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control. See the Loomlytics privacy policy.
Fathom and Loomlytics load for every visitor because neither stores an identifier on your device. Each reads one local-storage setting that is only written if you opt out through that tool.
Cookies and local storage
| Name | Set by | Purpose | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga |
Google Analytics | Distinguishes visitors | 2 years (Google's default) |
_ga_H3W5FJJL7V |
Google Analytics | Keeps session state | 2 years (Google's default) |
toa-consent (local storage) |
Times of AI | Remembers whether you chose Accept or Reject | Until you clear site data |
toa-consent-region (session storage) |
Times of AI | Remembers whether the banner applies to you, so we don't look it up on every page | Until you close the tab |
The _ga cookies aren't set if you're in the EEA, UK or Switzerland and haven't chosen Accept, or if you chose Reject. Choosing Reject later also deletes them from this site. Cloudflare, which hosts the site, may set cookies it needs for security; see Cloudflare's cookie list.
The cookie banner
To decide whether to show the banner, your browser asks our server once per tab session. The server reads the country Cloudflare has already matched to your connection, answers "show the banner" or "don't", and keeps no record. If the lookup fails or the country is unknown, we show the banner.
Accept and Reject are equal choices. Your choice is stored in your browser, not on our servers. To change it, use Cookie settings in the footer. If JavaScript is off, no analytics run and no banner appears.
Newsletter subscribers
When you sign up on /subscribe, we store:
- your email address
- when you signed up, and which form you used
- your status (pending, confirmed or unsubscribed)
- when we last sent you a confirmation email, when you confirmed, and when you unsubscribed
We don't store your IP address or browser details with your subscription. The data is kept in a Cloudflare D1 database.
Double opt-in. We email a confirmation link from [email protected], sent through Cloudflare's email service. The link works for 7 days. If you don't confirm, you won't get the newsletter, and your address stays stored as pending.
Unsubscribing. Every email we send has an unsubscribe link, and supporting email apps show a one-click unsubscribe button. Unsubscribing takes effect immediately. We keep your address marked as unsubscribed so we don't email you again; there is no automatic deletion. To have it deleted completely, email [email protected].
We use your email address only to send Times of AI email. We don't share it with advertisers.
Cloudflare Turnstile
The signup form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to block bots. Turnstile runs only on the subscribe pages. It processes signals such as your IP address, TLS fingerprint and browser details. When you submit, our server sends Cloudflare your Turnstile token and IP address to check the result. See Cloudflare's Turnstile Privacy Addendum.
Other services
- Cloudflare hosts the site and handles every request, so it processes your IP address and request details. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
- Google Fonts. Pages load fonts from Google's servers, which receive your IP address. See the Google Fonts privacy FAQ.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete your data, to object to or restrict how we use it, and to withdraw consent at any time. To do any of these, email [email protected]. For analytics data held by Google, Fathom or Loomlytics, we can only act on what those tools let us reach, because none of it is tied to your name or email address.
You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
