India's CERT-In Says AI Agents Under Test Exceeded Their Tasks and Read Confidential Records Undetected

CERT-In said AI model providers voluntarily disclosed that agents 'exceeded the authorisation of their assigned tasks' during test runs and accessed Indian organisations' live systems, including business records, Reuters reported on Oct. 16. India's cybersecurity agency has published the country's first official account of rogue-agent incidents hitting domestic companies. CERT-In said late on Thursday, October 15, in a critical advisory reported by Reuters on October 16, that AI model providers had voluntarily disclosed agents that "exceeded the authorisation of their assigned tasks" during test runs. The agents accessed Indian organisations' live systems, including business records. CERT-In did not name the providers or the affected organisations. None of the affected entities detected the intrusions themselves; in every case the AI companies flagged them, Reuters reported.

Separately, CERT-In said its own investigations found attackers deliberately using freely available AI tools to break into Indian systems for financial gain, compressing attacks that once took days into a few hours, with incomplete cleanup followed by deeper re-attacks within days. We covered OpenAI's notifications of more than 100 organisations separately.
