Schneider Electric Is Reported Near a ~$20 Billion Deal for PTC; No Announcement Yet
Schneider Electric, which now supplies much of the power and cooling inside AI data centers, is nearing a deal to buy U.S. industrial-software group PTC for about $20 billion, the Financial Times reported and a person close to the deal told Reuters on Oct. 4. An announcement could come as soon as Monday, but talks were ongoing with no certainty of a deal, and neither company had commented.

A company that got rich selling the power and cooling gear inside AI data centers may be about to spend that windfall on software. Schneider Electric is nearing a deal to buy PTC for about $20 billion, according to the Financial Times and a person close to the deal who spoke to Reuters on Sunday, Oct. 4.
The person told Reuters an agreement may be announced as soon as Monday, while stressing that discussions were ongoing and there was no certainty they would produce a deal. Schneider and PTC did not respond to Reuters outside business hours. As of Monday morning India time, Schneider’s global newsroom showed no announcement.
The two sides
Boston-based PTC sells software for designing, manufacturing and servicing products, and Reuters notes it has benefited from demand for its AI-powered tools. Its market value was $15.63 billion per LSEG data, so a roughly $20 billion price would imply a substantial premium if it holds.
Schneider Electric, once best known for fuses and circuit breakers, now supplies data centers with cooling units, server racks and power distribution, and Reuters says data-center demand, particularly from the U.S., is driving its earnings. A PTC deal would extend a software push that included its June agreement to buy Cognite, a privately held provider of AI software and industrial data.
How to read it
This is not an AI-lab deal. It is AI-infrastructure money changing form: hardware margins earned from the data-center build-out being redeployed into industrial software that sits closer to factory and product data. Whether that thesis matters depends on terms neither company has published.
