The AI-demand number markets latched onto this week is an estimate, not a reported result. On Tuesday, October 20, Super Micro Computer said preliminary revenue for its fiscal first quarter, ended September 30, is estimated at $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion, against its guidance of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion, "primarily due to increased demand for AI platforms." By our arithmetic, the midpoint of the new range is about $4 billion above the midpoint of the guidance.

Supermicro also estimated gross margin at 12.0% to 12.5%, against guidance of 10.4% to 10.8%, which it attributed mainly to customer and product mix. The company says the figures are unaudited, based on management's estimates and subject to revision as it closes its books, and that its auditor has performed no procedures on them. It will report results on a call on Tuesday, November 3.

Investing.com, via Yahoo Finance, reported the shares up 12% in premarket trading on Wednesday, October 21, and said the midpoint of the range is well above an analyst consensus of $14.99 billion. It noted that in July Supermicro had said fiscal fourth-quarter revenue would come in near the low end of its forecast. In Seoul, Yonhap cited Super Micro's "better-than-expected earnings" among the reasons chip stocks rallied on October 21; we track that session in our AI financing rout coverage.
