Claude Code Product Lead Cat Wu Joins OpenAI to Run Product Management for Core Products
Cat Wu, who led product for Anthropic's Claude Code, said on November 5 that she is joining OpenAI to lead product management for its Core Products team, the group behind Codex. OpenAI confirmed the hire to Business Insider and said she will report to Thibault Sottiaux. Wu left Anthropic last week; Anthropic declined to comment.
The person most publicly associated with building Claude Code is now going to work on its main rival. Cat Wu, who led product for Anthropic's coding agent, said on X early on November 5 that she is "joining OpenAI to lead product management for Core Products," the team that builds Codex.
The move#
OpenAI confirmed the hire to Business Insider. An OpenAI representative said Wu will report to Thibault Sottiaux, who leads Core Products, and work with Nick Turley on enterprise products and Ashley Alexander on consumer products. In her post Wu said she respects OpenAI "for bringing AI to over a billion people" and that the team will "build agents that have your back and your team's, and keep you in control."
Wu announced on Tuesday that she had left Anthropic the previous Friday. She joined Anthropic in August 2024 and oversaw Claude Code's growth from an internal tool into one of the company's biggest products, Business Insider and The Next Web reported. Anthropic declined to comment to Business Insider.
Why the timing stands out#
The move lands weeks before Anthropic's planned listing; it filed its S-1 in October. Asked on X whether leaving would let her sell shares earlier than staff who stayed, Wu said she had "no idea" and that it "wasn't a factor for me," Business Insider reported.
OpenAI has been building out Codex beyond writing code, and this week agreed to buy Pierre Computer to fold its code storage into the product. Business Insider says Codex adoption has been a priority since OpenAI fell behind Anthropic in enterprise sales earlier this year.
Limits#
- Wu has not said why she left Anthropic, and OpenAI has not described what Core Products will change under her.
- Claims about Claude Code's commercial size are the outlets' characterisations; Anthropic has not commented on her departure.
