Butterfly Network Secures FDA Clearance for AI Ultrasound Gestational Age Tool

On March 30, 2026, Butterfly Network received FDA clearance for a fully automated Gestational Age (GA) Tool integrated into its handheld ultrasound solution. This marks the first FDA-cleared blind-sweep ultrasound AI tool for estimating gestational age, trained on over 21 million images and delivering results equivalent to sonographer-performed biometry in under two minutes.

TLDR

Butterfly Network’s new AI-powered Gestational Age Tool enables rapid, automated estimation of pregnancy stage using a simple blind-sweep method on its handheld ultrasound. It requires minimal training, provides results in under two minutes via a three-step process (enter fundal height, apply gel, perform guided sweeps), and is designed to expand access in rural U.S. areas and low-resource settings globally where traditional ultrasound expertise is scarce.

Technical Details and Deployment

The tool uses deep-learning models developed with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It has been trained on more than 21 million images across diverse demographics. Performance is equivalent to standard biometry-based assessments for patients between 16–37 weeks gestation.

It is already deployed in Malawi and Uganda with support from a Gates Foundation grant. FDA clearance supports broader rollout, including in Sub-Saharan Africa and U.S. rural health initiatives.

“Improving maternal health outcomes and expanding access to prenatal imaging has become an urgent priority,” said Sachita Shah, MD, Vice President of Global Health at Butterfly Network. “With FDA clearance, we now have an AI-powered tool that can help transform maternal health... by addressing longstanding gaps in access to timely, reliable imaging.”

Steve Cashman, Chief Business Officer, noted use cases in emergency settings, high-mortality countries, and rural U.S. communities.

Why this story matters

This represents a meaningful step in democratizing medical imaging through AI. By enabling non-specialists to obtain reliable gestational age estimates quickly and portably, it can accelerate prenatal care decisions, reduce maternal and fetal mortality risks, and bridge access gaps in underserved regions—both domestically and internationally—without requiring extensive infrastructure or expert sonographers.
