Google restructured Google DeepMind leadership. Demis Hassabis leaves day-to-day GDM CEO duties to become Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs. What Google said it is optimizing for
Pichai’s memo pairs two pressures: accelerate the full AI stack (Search, YouTube, Cloud, Gemini products) and free Hassabis to shape AGI and science externally and strategically. Product color in the memo: Gemini app at 950M+ monthly users; Gemma past 900M+ downloads; Flash demand and a live Cyber model called out as momentum markers. Hassabis’s note says AGI feels “close at hand,” cites confidence in Gemini 4 progress under Koray’s model leadership, and doubles down on Isomorphic / health as AI’s #1 application.
Discovery Loop
Google’s primary post names Dean + Ghemawat launching an independent PBC to accelerate discoveries in ML, science, and engineering, with Google as founding investor and Cloud partner plus collaboration on an ML-systems research framework. Secondary reporting (Axios, Reuters, WSJ, NYT) adds co-founders Vinyals and Le and frames the exit as one of the largest simultaneous talent moves out of Google AI infrastructure and research leadership in years.
