Anthropic Puts Claude in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides — Marketplace Beta, Not a Partnership

Anthropic launched Claude for Google Workspace in public beta on all paid Claude plans: a Marketplace add-on that opens a Claude sidebar in Docs, Sheets and Slides, plus connectors to create and edit Google files from chat. Default ‘Ask before edits’; optional ‘Accept all’. Enterprise CMEK, Compliance API and OpenTelemetry audit export apply. Gemini is already native in Workspace. xAI shipped a Grok Workspace add-on in July — this is not a first.

Claude already ships add-ins for Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook. On October 6, Anthropic put the same idea on Google’s turf: a public-beta Claude for Google Workspace add-on, installed from the Google Workspace Marketplace, plus connectors that edit Google files from a Claude chat.

It is a Marketplace add-on, not a Google partnership. Nothing Anthropic published shows Google co-building or co-marketing it. Gemini is already built into Docs, Sheets and Slides natively, as 9to5Google notes. And it is not a first for third-party AI in Workspace: xAI’s Grok add-on shipped in July.

What the add-on does

Claude opens in a sidebar beside the open Doc, Sheet or deck. It can read the file, see which text, cells or slides are selected, and change the file directly.

  • Docs: fix or restyle passages in place without disturbing surrounding formatting, or propose larger rewrites as suggestion cards.
  • Sheets: write formulas, build pivot tables and native charts, add tabs, and pull a range into Python for joins or cleaning before writing results back.
  • Slides: build new slides from the deck’s existing layouts and themes; flag overlapping or hard-to-read elements.

Default mode is Ask before edits — each change appears as an approval card. Accept all edits lets Claude apply changes without stopping.

Users signed in with a Claude account get the same models, connectors and skills as in Claude itself. On Enterprise plans, the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK) and OpenTelemetry audit export also apply to the add-on.

Connectors from chat

Anthropic also released Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors (beta) that let Claude create and edit Google files from a chat, with access matching the user’s existing Google sharing permissions. Admins can deploy the add-on to a domain or selected groups from the Google Admin console.

Why the distribution matters

For enterprises that run on Workspace but standardise on Claude, a sidebar with Anthropic’s enterprise controls removes a reason to keep drafting work in Gemini. Claude for Excel, PowerPoint and Word are generally available and Outlook is in public beta, per Anthropic’s Microsoft 365 post — so this completes a two-suite surface, not a debut. Adoption on the Marketplace, and how Google treats a rival’s sidebar, are the open questions. There is no pricing change and no usage figures.

Limits

  • Single origin in practice: Anthropic’s post, with 9to5Google restating it. No Google comment, usage or pricing change.
  • Public beta on paid plans only.
  • Not a Google partnership; Gemini remains native.
  • Not the first third-party Workspace AI add-on (xAI/Grok, July).
  • Microsoft 365 GA/beta status is from Anthropic’s undated M365 post; no launch date attached here.
