Caixin: ByteDance and Tencent Fast-Track Personal AI Agents After Meta's Muse
ByteDance and Tencent are speeding up personal AI agents to compete after Meta's Muse took off, Caixin reported on Oct. 12. Citing a company source, Caixin says ByteDance accelerated before the National Day holiday, building on an April project code-named Spell for its Doubao assistant. The report is paywalled; Tencent's plans are not described in the portion we could read.

Meta's Muse has set off a race between ByteDance and Tencent to build personal AI agents for consumers, Caixin reports. The two are fast-tracking personal agents to capture the consumer market after Muse's breakout, according to the October 12 report, which is paywalled beyond its opening.
What Caixin reports
ByteDance sped up development of a personal agent before the early-October National Day holiday, Caixin says, citing a company source. The work builds on a project code-named "Spell," started in April to build a personal agent for the Doubao mobile assistant, and ByteDance plans to integrate the product with Doubao. The free portion we could read does not describe what Tencent is building.
The Spell background
A Longbridge item relays an Economic Observer report, itself citing Sina Technology, that Doubao had been internally testing an exploratory personal-assistant product since April, led by the Doubao Mobile Assistant team, and that it had not been released partly because of the Doubao phone launch. After products such as Muse drew attention overseas, the source said, Doubao sped up, merging the Spell team with the Doubao conversational team for a launch "soon." That chain of reporting is three steps removed from the source, and the Longbridge text gives the testing start as both April 2024 and April "this year"; we follow Caixin's April.
Muse's launch
Meta launched Muse on September 8, and the New York Times, citing Sensor Tower, reported that more than 6.6 million people had downloaded it and 1.8 million were using it daily, as we covered in our report on Zuckerberg launching Muse despite safety concerns. Muse's rollout has also carried security questions, including 404 Media's report of rushed KVM-escape fixes before launch, with no known exploitation.
Neither company has announced a launch date, and Caixin's report rests on an unnamed source.
