NVIDIA Pledges Compute Valued at $250 Million Over Five Years for UK Agentic AI Safety Research

NVIDIA announced on Oct. 13 a five-year compute donation it values at $250 million, or $50 million a year, for UK agentic safety and security research. Most goes to the wider UK research community, with a proportion for Oxford-led BOLD, UCL-led SOFAIR and Imperial College London. Access runs through UK-based NVIDIA Cloud Partners; provider selection and commercial terms are still to be agreed.

NVIDIA is putting a dollar figure on UK agentic-safety research, but the figure is the value of donated compute, not cash. In a release dated Monday, October 13, NVIDIA announced a five-year compute donation valued at $250 million to support UK agentic safety and security research, or $50 million in compute access a year. Provider selection, technical architecture and commercial terms are still to be agreed, NVIDIA says.

Who gets the compute

The majority will support the wider UK AI safety and security research community, according to NVIDIA. A proportion will support work with three groups:

  • BOLD, the British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab, led by the University of Oxford
  • SOFAIR, the Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab, led by UCL
  • Imperial College London, whose work will include safety engineering and robotics

NVIDIA did not say how the commitment divides among them.

Access will be delivered through UK-based NVIDIA Cloud Partners, with infrastructure hosted in the UK. NVIDIA says the research will focus on secure agents, open-model security and real-world threat mitigations, including secure sandboxes, reproducible research and safety assessment benchmarks, and will use its OpenShell runtime software and Sentry reference design.

What officials said

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said "AI capability and safety must advance together." UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan called the commitment "a vote of confidence" in the country's AI research, and said its objectives will be central to the UK's G20 presidency. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said "people need to feel the technology is safe and secure."

BOLD founding director Jakob Foerster said the compute will help it "explore transparent and human-centric approaches to AI." Imperial's Alessandra Russo said the "next frontier of artificial intelligence is physical."

NVIDIA says the commitment builds on its work with UK researchers, including the University of Bristol's Isambard-AI supercomputer.

Limits

  • The $250 million is NVIDIA's own valuation of the compute; partners and terms are not yet agreed.
  • The wire version of the release on Markets Insider (GlobeNewswire) is the same text, not independent confirmation.
