OpenAI Doubles Work and Codex Allowances on ChatGPT Pro and Cancels a Planned Cut for Pro 200 Subscribers

OpenAI said on October 29 that ChatGPT Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans now include twice their previous Work and Codex usage, and it cancelled a reduction for Pro 200 subscribers that it had announced in September. OpenAI's Tibo Sottiaux said on X Business Premium is also doubling and that extended limits for Dots continue. OpenAI does not publish the numeric limits.

A large brass pressure gauge on pipework has its needle swung far round its blank dial, beside a smaller gauge whose needle sits low.

OpenAI reversed itself on the day a cut was due to take effect, which says something about how much agent usage now matters to its most expensive subscribers. Its ChatGPT release notes for October 29 say Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans now include twice their previous Work and Codex allowance, and that OpenAI has cancelled the Pro 200 reduction it announced in a September 29 email.

What changes#

Pro 200 subscribers who already had the higher allowance keep it, and those on the lower allowance get twice their previous Work and Codex usage from October 29, bringing them to the same limit, OpenAI's notes say. Tibo Sottiaux, who announces ChatGPT and Codex changes for OpenAI on X, posted that limits are doubling for "all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today," adding: "We heard your kind feedback and won't be reducing usage limits for Pro 200."

BleepingComputer reported that OpenAI had planned to reduce the included allowance for existing Pro 200 subscribers after October 29 while keeping the price at $200 a month. The Decoder reported that the Plus plan is unchanged, and that OpenAI says doubling a quota does not mean twice as many completed tasks, since consumption varies by model, task and settings.

Sottiaux said OpenAI will keep offering extended limits for Dots, its always-on agents, and that Dot usage stays separate from default usage. Pro users in the US can now text their Dot over iMessage and RCS.

Limits#

  • OpenAI does not publish numeric usage limits for any tier, so "twice" cannot be translated into tasks or tokens.
  • OpenAI's release notes say Business Premium gets more Work and Codex usage but give the doubling figure only for Pro plans; the Business Premium doubling comes from Sottiaux's post.
  • The Decoder's framing of the move as competition with Anthropic is its own analysis; OpenAI did not give a reason beyond customer feedback.
