Prime Intellect Acquires Moondream, Bringing Its Photon Inference Engine and Vision Models In-House
Prime Intellect said on Oct. 13 it has acquired Moondream, the maker of open vision-language models and the Photon inference engine, with Moondream's founders joining to lead inference and multimodal work. Terms were not disclosed.

Prime Intellect says it has acquired Moondream, whose founders Vik Korrapati and Jay Allen are joining "to lead and scale inference" and to speed up its work on multimodal models, including vision and computer use, according to a Prime Intellect blog post on Tuesday, October 13. Terms were not disclosed.
What Prime gets
Moondream makes open-weight vision-language models and built Photon, an inference engine that compiles each model into a single GPU program, along with custom GPU kernels, Prime Intellect says. Photon and Moondream's kernel work are being integrated into Prime's stack, and Moondream 3.1 is now available through Prime Inference running on Photon, according to the post. Moondream Cloud customers will receive credits on Prime's platform, it says.
Prime Intellect claims Moondream 3.1 reaches 80% of the accuracy of Meta's Muse Wonder at pointing at objects in photos at about 1/1000th of the cost. That comparison comes from what Prime calls an unpublished internal evaluation.
Context from other coverage
CryptoBriefing reports that Moondream had fewer than 10 employees and had raised $4.5 million, and that Prime Intellect closed a $130 million Series A at a $1 billion valuation in July 2026. In CryptoBriefing's view, Prime is buying Moondream mainly for its inference-optimisation tools rather than its vision model.
