Claude Memory Now Available to Free Users
On March 2, 2026, Anthropic made its memory feature—allowing Claude to retain and recall details from previous conversations—available to all users on the free tier for the first time, with an accompanying import tool to bring context from other AI services.
TLDR
Anthropic expanded Claude Memory to free users starting March 2, 2026. The feature lets Claude automatically remember relevant facts, preferences, and project details across separate conversations, with user controls for inspection and deletion. An import tool was also introduced to migrate memories from services like ChatGPT.
What Changed on March 2
According to Anthropic's official Claude Help Center release notes for March 2, 2026:
"Memory from chat history is now available for all Claude users, including free users."
Previously, memory was limited to paid plans (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise). The expansion brings the capability to free accounts immediately, though with plan-appropriate rate and capacity limits.
Accompanying updates include:
- Easier import of saved memories from other AI providers using a provided extraction prompt and paste flow.
- Users can view, edit, or delete individual memories through Settings.
- Chat search helps surface relevant past context.
The underlying system generates memory summaries from conversation history and surfaces them when relevant in new sessions.
Why this story matters
Making persistent, cross-session memory available without a subscription removes a significant friction point for casual and new users. It makes Claude more useful for ongoing projects, learning, and personal assistance at no cost. The import tool also lowers switching costs for people moving from competing services.
At the same time, it surfaces practical questions around data retention, user control, and how memory summaries are created and stored across large user bases.
