OpenAI is pushing ChatGPT's ad-supported tiers into markets well beyond the US and Europe. On Wednesday, October 21, OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads are expanding to 26 more countries, bringing availability to 89. They include 14 more Latin American countries, among them Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, and markets such as Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

OpenAI says more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since ads launched just over eight months ago, a count of advertisers since launch rather than of those currently active. Ads appear only on the Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro and Enterprise stay ad-free. OpenAI says its next phase will add formats, objectives, buying options and measurement. CNBC notes that OpenAI's ad business reached a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate in August, up from $100 million in March, as CNBC previously reported; OpenAI gave no new revenue figure.

At that August milestone, OpenAI said ads were available in over 40 countries with tens of thousands of advertisers, as we reported then; its European expansion was announced earlier that month.

Limits

  • The advertiser count and country total are OpenAI's figures; the run-rate figure is from August and is not booked annual revenue.
