Google just put its models into user-generated games — the category Roblox built and monetises through creators — as a US-only experiment with a Unity path behind it.

On October 7, Google launched Playground, an experimental platform where people describe a game in text prompts, play it immediately and change its physics, rules, characters or setting by asking, with no coding. Games can be kept private, shared by link or published to a Playground Explore gallery ranked by player ratings and activity, with multiplayer and leaderboards in some genres and Google Play Games profiles. Google says every published game goes through safety screening.

It is open to US users 18 and older at playground.google, with tiered creation access based on Google One membership. Unity Spark integration — professional-level mechanics, high-fidelity 3D and the Unity runtime — is in testing with a closed beta coming soon.

Models and market reaction

A Google spokesperson told The Verge that Playground runs on Gemini, Nano Banana and Lyria, per The Next Web, which also reports that Roblox shares fell as much as 8% in premarket trading after the announcement (citing Investing.com) and Unity slipped 1.6%. No financial terms were given for the Unity partnership. Premarket moves are not closing prices; where Roblox finished the session was not checked for this brief.

Experiment, with a strategic hook

The premarket drop shows investors take a Google threat to creator-game platforms seriously even for a US-only experiment. The Unity tie-up is the sharper strategic piece: a path from prompt-built toys to real engine output, if Spark ships. Until then it remains an experiment with Google One-gated creation and safety screening on published games.

Limits

  • Model list via TNW citing a Verge spokesperson quote — not named in Google's post.
  • Roblox "as much as 8% in premarket" only; closing move not stated.
  • Unity partnership terms undisclosed.
