Simons Foundation, Anthropic and OpenAI Commit $15 Million in Funding and Resources for Mathematicians in the AI Era
The Simons Foundation said on Oct. 15 it, Anthropic and OpenAI will commit $15 million in combined funding and resources, awarded by the foundation, to help mathematicians evaluate AI-assisted results and set standards. OpenAI says it is contributing $5 million; Anthropic's share was not disclosed.

The foundation, not the labs, will decide who gets the money, it says. The Simons Foundation announced on Thursday, October 15 that it, Anthropic and OpenAI will commit $15 million in combined funding and resources. The foundation will manage and award the funding, including through an open call for proposals, for workshops and initiatives that help researchers evaluate recent AI-assisted results, learn new tools and "shape collective standards for AI use."
Anthropic and OpenAI will also provide AI tools and computing resources to foundation-supported researchers, extending beyond mathematics to basic science, the foundation says. OpenAI said on X that it is contributing $5 million; Anthropic's share was not disclosed.
"The community should be driving discussions of how these tools are evaluated, adopted and used, not any single company or institution," said foundation president David Spergel. OpenAI separately backs an independent mathematicians' advisory group.
Limits
